The year 2014 has been gone, as always, a year where at the environmental level it's been good, some not so good. We have to mention that we are still living beyond the limits of our planet, which is unique and each of its irreplaceable creatures. But it is also true that if we look back, we see that only a few years ago, concern for these problems was limited to very small groups, but now we are all aware that we have to make an effort and do our partly from the companies and institutions to every citizen of each village, to preserve the natural heritage we enjoy.
What we can do to save our planet?
The best way forward is to see that the effort is there and
results. Therefore, The Desman has compiled some of the great achievements of
this past year.
1. Growing demonstrations to act against climate change. The
climate summit revealed new commitments and new challenges of institutions that
respond to these complaints from citizens.
2. Spain reduced its forest fires. The less surface area burned
since 1917 cannot be attributed to a single factor this achievement because,
although the weather always influences, cannot deny the merit of professional
prevention and firefighting and value of awareness campaigns and policy aimed
at achieving this goal.
3. The signing of fluvial custody in the Gorges of Riaz. This
agreement established between WWF Adena and the Duero River Basin, will develop
a project that will turn this section into a model of sustainability for the
rivers.
The increase in marine Natura 2000 network. This year we
have established 39 new SPAs (Special Protection Area for Birds) and 9 new SCI
(Site of Community Importance), expanding the protected area which it currently
enjoys, constituting in Spain 7% of total the sea surface.
4. The consolidation of the fight against oil exploration. Not
only in our territory. The greatest achievement in this area has been to save
Virunga drilling with 750 000 signatures worldwide. It is the oldest national
park in the whole of Africa, home of the mountain gorillas in the Democratic
Republic of Congo.
6. The demonstration that sustainable fishing is possible.
Employment Greenpeace presented its report on board, which shows that in
addition to sustainable, sustainable fishing model generates profits. The petition
of more than 300 000 people to end abusive fishing models adds to this effort.
7. The statement of the Future of the Arctic, backed by more than
1500 persons around the world. This initiative aims to create a natural
sanctuary around the North Pole
These are great data and for which we must take heart, but
we do not rest on our laurels! The fight to save the planet is not an
intermittent practice; it should be an attitude, a way of life. We, from our
small little niche, will continue to strive to make our and give the best we
have to get it.
